AT A GLANCE

Best property investment: Two-bedroom unit in Brisbane’s inner north, in 2007

Best personal investment: Training for and competing in triathlons since 2008

Time in the property: industry 16 years

You never forget your first. Joel Davoren certainly never did, as his first property investment was one that gave him an appreciation of the apartment market throughout his career.

“I bought a two-bedroom, older-style apartment in Brisbane’s inner north about 5km from the CBD. It may have looked horrendous, but it was well located, spacious and had beautiful bones,” he says.

“When we sold it a little over a year later for a substantial return on the ‘tidy-up’ we’d done, we had enough profit to leverage into a property that secured our financial future.”

As well as researching and investing in financially smart property deals, Davoren also makes a point of focusing on his personal wellbeing. Shortly after he started buying property, he developed a keen interest in triathlon competitions.

“I generally compete in two races a year, and the Cairns Ironman is my favourite course. Our current home has special appeal because it gives easy access to mountain ranges where I like to ride,” Davoren says.

“By investing in myself, I can operate at a level that most benefi ts both my business and family!”

Davoren’s ultimate goal as an investor is to own a lifestyle property on the Sunshine Coast debt-free
